Building in Layers

The cultures of middle America (Aztec & Maya) in particular, built in layers. Excavations of the temples these ancient people built show years of ever expanding and growing layers. The outermost layer is the biggest and newest, while the most ancient are buried deep within.

There is something fascinating to me about this architectural practice of iterative growth. Unlike our modern approach to construction where we see old things toppled and destroyed to make new things, these ancient people took what they had and added another layer.

I look at the way we grow and see these layers. I also see how the older layers support my current state of growth. I am a decade along in a journey into a mission that I never expected would become such a huge part of my life. But when I take a moment to review everything leading up to this journey, I can see the connections through the layers.
